Polyester resins, also known as Unsaturated Polyester Resins (UPR), combined with fiberglass reinforcements have been the building blocks of the composites industry for decades. These formulations provide low cost, ease of handling, quick cure, and high strength to create a wide variety of composite parts in countless applications. They are ideal for open molding as well as closed molding processes such as vacuum infusion processing, resin transfer molding, filament winding, compression molding and pultrusion. Polyester resin is also the primary resin matrix used in compression molding, bulk molding compounds (BMC) and sheet molding compounds (SMC), and in the pultrusion process.
Vinyl ester resins (VE) are a polyester backbone molecule with an epoxy component. Vinyl ester formulations provide enhanced corrosion resistance and have a wide range of available strength, heat distortion, and shrinkage characteristics.
Fire-retardant (FR) resins can be divided into several formulation categories: halogenated, inorganic FR, organophosphorus FR, and nitrogen-containing FR.
These resin systems are represented within two major groups of FR – Halogenated FR and halogen-free FR. The halogenated FR resins are generally better performing, less expensive, easier to process and have better physical properties than halogen-free formulations.
The type of FR resin system used will depend on the function of the polymer and the specific fire performance requirements.
Gel coats & pigments add color, increase durability and enhance the appearance of composites parts.
Gel coats are specialized polyester or vinyl ester resin formulations that are formulated as an in-mold coating to provide appealing cosmetics and protect the underlying laminate. Gel coat is typically sprayed in a mold and the structural laminate, or cast polymer matrix, applied behind the gel coat surface in either open molding or closed molding processes.
